Over the past few years, there has been a spike in tequila sales.
Unfortunately, farmers are having a tough time keeping up with the demand for blue agave, which is the main ingredient used in distilling the stuff.
In recent months, the price has gone from 3.83 pesos per kilogram to 22 pesos per kilogram! Farmers say it takes an average of 8 years to grow mature agave, and that it could be 2021 before they are able to really keep up with the higher demand of the current tequila market.
Because tequila sales are expected to increase at least for the next few years, customers might have to deal with higher prices -- or even shortages. (Reuters)
