Are you "quarantweening"?

When times are rough, we seek out the comforts of the easier times. For our generation, the good ol’ days were filled with Wii Bowling and sweatpants that said “juicy” on the butt. We’ve since upgraded to more comfortable pants with no describing words for our booties, but there’s plenty of people frantically searching for double-A batteries for the Wiimote they found in an old box. Millennials are officially “Quarantweening.”

Quarantweening is all about an escape from the reality of 2020. Professor of literature and linguistics Hal McDonald says feelings of “loneliness, boredom, and ‘self-discontinuity,’” are big triggers for nostalgia which we use to give “us access to pleasurable experiences we have shared with other people in our past.” And since this quarantine has been a non-stop dumpster fire filled with stress and loneliness, it’s no wonder people our generation is turning to Capri Suns filled with rum and binge-watching old Nick-tunes.

So don’t be ashamed if you’ve happened to flip through your old high school yearbook while rage-cleaning of your place because you’re not alone. Kicking back and enjoying our favorite things from pre-2010 is helping our generation remember that life wasn’t always stressful as it is now, and it won’t always be this way.
