Miss American extends her reign for the first time ever!

Camille Schrier made history when she did the first-ever science experiment in the talent portion of the Miss America contest. She went on to win the title of Miss America 2020 in December and now she’s set to make history once again when she becomes the first woman to hold the title for two years because the 2021 competition has been postponed due to the pandemic.

The beauty queen says she’s a “non-traditional competitor” in Miss America and that it’s “kind of on-brand” for her to do it this way. “I'm just kind of embracing that I don't really do anything the regular way, and I think that that's important for young people to see,” explains Schrier, and she jokes, "I realized now that I'm probably going to be a ‘Jeopardy’ question.”

Since her win, the grad student at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy has been promoting STEM education and while she’s had to get creative to spread her message without the in-person engagements she did before, she’s found a way to reach even more people online. Schrier has teamed up with 3M onScience at Home, a free online program with STEM-focused video content for teachers and students ages 6 to 12. She does science experiments there, including the “elephant’s toothpaste” demo - the same one she did for the Miss America contest.
