Mom Sues When Son Doesn't Make Varsity Team

I totally get it that this kid wants to play... And I get it that his mom really wants him to play... But there is no version of this where this kid comes out on top in the end.

The mother of a 16 year old, who is named in court papers as Jane Doe, has filed suit in US District Court against Ladue Horton Watkins High School. The woman says that her son, who is currently a Junior in high school who played JV soccer for Ladue last year, tried out but didn't make the team. The family accepted that he didn't make the varsity team, but they are upset because he wasn't then named to the JV team. They were told that juniors aren't put on the junior varsity team. It's reserved for the freshmen and sophomores.

They also claim that the district historically lets female juniors play on the girls' JV team, according to the suit filed by the boy's parents, and that constitutes gender discrimination on the school's part in addition to the age discrimination claim.

After a court hearing last week, both sides are waiting to hear a decision from the judge. The boy's lawyer, who is also his lawyer in this case, says that this is a problem that goes way beyond Ladue, claiming that schools across the country have this policy and it's illegal. Meanwhile, the lead attorney for the school district declined to comment.
