Thanks to a viral tweet that claimed people under 40 no longer separate their whites and colors, this has become a whole online debate... But is it really true? According to a new poll, it's almost 50/50 across the board!
The YouGov poll finds:
- 58% of all U.S. adults do separate their whites from colors while doing laundry.
- And it’s true, generationally those under 40 are less likely to do so, but that doesn’t mean none of them are.
- In fact, 48% of folks under 40 do say they separate their whites and colors, although 41% do not.
- Specifically…
- 46% of Gen Z separates their laundry, while 35% don't.
- 48% of Millennials separate their laundry, while 42% don't.
Of course those numbers are much lower than older generations.
- 76% of those over 40 say they separate their whites and colors, while only 27% do not.
- Broken down by generation…
- 63% of those in Gen X separate their items, while 32% don't.
- 72% of Baby Boomers separate their laundry, while only 24% don’t.
- And interestingly only slightly more women are laundry separators than men (61% vs. 56%).
And it turns out, for some folks the question is moot.
- The poll finds that 5% of Americans don’t do their own laundry.
- And that’s true for 11% of Gen Z.
