Parenting Advice From The 1950's That Still Works Today

When we look back at some of the parenting advice from the 1950's, ya might notice a few similar things we parents are still doing!

Why? Cause it's tried-and-true advice!

Keep A Regular Bedtime

It's very important to get enough sleep, especially for kids. A lot of growth and change happens while they are sleeping. Enforcing a regular bedtime (at the same time every night) ensures that our kiddos get the sleep their bodies need (and gives us time to ourselves).

Self-Care

Even back then "baby manuals" warned against letting youngsters rule the house. This advice still rings true! Kiddos thrive with a loving and caring, yet, stern adult figure. Without it, they'll think they can "rule the whole house." That behavior is hard to correct as they get older.

Be The Parent, Not Their Friend

Parents were very focused on being a parent to their child in the 1950's and not about becoming their friend. This advice is still a good takeaway. Kids need a sense a direction and support, and we parents offer that.

Manners

Teaching manners should be paramount! Learning to say please, thank you, and excuse me. Respecting their elders... how to cover their mouth when coughing and sneeze into their elbow (we don't want to spread germs... and in 2020, it's not just polite, it's required)!

Let Them Fail

In the 50s, there was a mentality of letting children make mistakes and to let them fail. How else will our kiddos learn how to navigate the world around them by themselves?

Keep Things Simple

Keep it simple with the toys... and limit the amount of screen time (after all, they didn't have electronics in the 1950's).
