After everything we all experienced over the last year with the pandemic, as well as fears about things like climate change, wildfires, etc. there are some people out there worried about the what we may face in the future, which is leading more and more people to make sure they are prepared.
According to survivalist schools across the country, more and more Americans seem to be interested in wilderness and urban-disaster preparedness. In fact, the fastest growing market for such classes seem to be young families concerned about being ready for whatever comes in the future. Shane Hobel, founder of the Mountain Scout Survival School, notes, “It was never like that before.”
Such concerned families take these classes to learn a variety of skills, including pre-disaster planning of family rendezvous points, water purification, roadside survival, preparing a “bail out bag” and more.
"[My husband and I] want to be totally sure that she is prepared for world climate calamities,” 44-year-old Kavita Pawria-Sanchez, from Brooklyn says, referring to their young daughter. “Things are going to happen. They’re already happening,” adding, “I don’t even think it’s just specific skills. It’s a mindset, philosophy and values that she will need.”
And these classes don’t come cheap, Hobel’s school charges depending on class levels and duration, but intro classes go for $125 per person, $230 per couple and $460 per family.
