To honor Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) is celebrating all month long. The initiative, “Go Green with CALS,” will offer a variety of socially distanced in-person, virtual, and grab-and-go programing across all the branches and will have many ways for adults and children alike to reflect on and celebrate Earth Day.
Virtual programming for adults includes everything from how to incorporate native plants into your garden and myths of energy efficiency, to eating local to reducing food waste. On the youth side, there is upcycled crafting and weekly updates on butterfly transformation leading up to a butterfly release. With the grab-and-go kits, you can make your own seed bombs to help provide wildflowers for the bees or make your own beeswax wraps to reduce your use of plastic wrap. Tune in to catch a live solar cooking demo or join the park cleanup at Boyle Park on April 17 from 9 a.m. to noon.
CALS already has a variety of systems in place to help create a more earth-friendly environment. From the obvious – lending out books and the most recent move to adopt solar panels to offset electric use – they also have a system-wide recycling program and a Board-approved sustainability policy.
