Between cuffing season and wanting someone to spend the holidays with, lonely singles may be on the search for somebody to snuggle up with during the cold winter months. Thanks to inflation, the thought of saving by splitting the bills with someone may be even more appealing this year. But money can be a source of tension for couples and new research reveals just how many people have ended things with someone because of money.
It turns out, nearly a quarter of Americans (24%) have broken up with someone over finances, according to a new survey from Wealth of Geeks. The poll of 1,019 adults finds:
- Men are slightly more likely to break up over money issues, with 29% of men saying they’ve done so compared to 23% of women.
- Just over a quarter of men (26%) say their partner ended things with them over finances, but only 15% of women say it’s happened to them.
- Age is a factor as well, with early and mid-career adults having the highest tendency to break up over money.
- Broken down by age, 30% of respondents between 35 and 49 say they’ve ended a relationship over money, compared to 28% of those between 25 and 34 who’ve done the same.
- In the 35 to 49 age group, 25% admit they’ve been dumped over money compared to 19% of those in the 25 to 34 age group.
- Only 13% of younger adults between 18 and 24 report having broken up with someone over money and about the same number, 15%, of older adults between 50 and 64 have.
